The Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH (Research Center Juelich GmbH) presents on the Group Exhibits Hydrogen + Fuell Cells its Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (PMFC), which it started to develop 3.5 years ago. Its vision is to produce the PMFC with greater power and greater power density as well cheaper. Besides the PMFC, the Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH also presents "Phoebus", an energy storage system, and a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC).

Company Interest:
A staff of 4300 are devoted to investigating current issues in the areas of energy, environment, life, information and matter in one of the largest research institution in Europe. In Jülich scientists from many different disciplines work together closely. This work results ins contributions to basic research and long-term programmes, applied research and key technologies.

Achievements in 2000:
Compact Energy Storage Module: Storage of renewable energy (solar radiation, wind) in the form of hydrogen and oxygen from water electrolysis. Reconversion of these gases into electricity in a fuel cell. Solar, all-year, emission-free and decentralized electricity supply on basis of the PHOEBUS concept.

News at HANNOVER FAIR 2001:
Semiconductor Power Switches: Development of innovative system components i.e. semiconductor power switches for improvement of systems efficiency and reduction of systems costs. Concept construction and detailed engineering of partial systems for an energy storage system based on hydrogen to achieve a compact PHOEBUS plant and fully automatic operation in grid-distant regions.
